Altrincham U14’s V Newcastle Town U14’s
Newcastle Town U14’s opened up the preseason with a very exciting away game up the M6 against Altrincham FC U14’s on the hottest day of the year so far. Starting with a new 4-5-1 formation handing a starting debut to new signing Leo Emery. With new goalkeeper Dan Harrison on the bench.
Five first half goals in a dominate display killed the game off as a contest and even though the hosts pulled two early goals back in the second half the game was then swiftly brought under control and even though Newcastle didn’t score Altrincham also didn’t look likely to add to the scoreline.
Altrincham started in a very positive manner and you could tell that they had been training for the last month with a very good result the previous week in another friendly that they had played in. They passed with intent and closed down with a high energy. This said once the Newcastle midfield sorting it self out and understood what was required of them with in the new formation they took over and what a take over it was a marauding Viking raiding party would have been proud. The game all of a sudden changed from being in the Newcastle half to being deep into the Altrincham third. If the lads in the wider areas weren’t creating opportunities then the midfield was flowing through like a river through a broken dam.
This shift of energy and attacking intent created the first of the preseason goals. Max Gardner and Carlo De Stefano combined on the left to open up the defence which allowed new striker Leo Emery to get one on one with his defender on the edge of the box. With a shift of the ball to the right and a shot low to the goalkeepers left Newcastle. 1-0
One became two swiftly with a corner from Max Van Der Laan caused trouble in the defence and Leighton Thomas pounced to score his first goal in the blue of Newcaslte during his 13 months. 2-0
The third followed swiftly as now the rampant Newcastle midfield sensed blood and when Max Barlow found space he looked up shot and scored into the middle of the goal. 3-0
Now the shots were raining down on the home keepers goal. Callum Punchard crashing against the cross bar and Will Stanyer narrowly missing the bottom right hand corner as the midfield started to flex its prowess.
Numbers four and five came quickly and killed the game totally Max Gardner popping and prod the ball into the goal after great play down the right handside with Leighton Thomas and Max Van Der Laan opening up the left hand side of the Altrincham team to release Jake Till who moved forward and drilled the ball across the six yard box. 4-0
Then just before halftime Max Barlow wiggle free when in fairness he could of won a penalty a couple of times. Looked up and found Carlo De Stefano who drilled a fine strike into the bottom corner FIVE nil and Five different goal scorers. 5-0
Half time Altrincham FC u14’s 0 v 5 Newcastle Town u 14’s
Newcastle made a few changes now going back to the trusted 4-1-3-2 and handing Daniel Harrison his debut.
Unfortunately the sheer heat and the fact Newcastle had only just started preseason became evident as Altrincham started off really fast and struck early when the forward broke the offside trap stepped into the box and placed his shot beyond the Newcastle goalkeeper who unfortunately had only just started his debut. 5-1
Unfortunately Newcastle decided to give away a cheap corner to which was exploited by the host and amidst the confusion scored the second goal. 5-2
Now the Altrincham tails were up and they sensed an unlikely opportunity to create there own great escape. Thankfully though Newcastle although were clearly rattled and lacking the same fitness levels they displayed in the first half started to regain some composure.
Baring a few little wobbles they asserted there control on the game whilst creating a couple of opportunities where we could of added to the scoreline.
This said it was a very encouraging start o preseason and highlighted to the lads that they can and will be playing some very exciting football this season.
