Newcastle Town U18s 1-1 Witton Albion U21s
The Midland Floodlit team kicked off their pre season schedule on Sunday against a Witton Albion mixed U21s squad after a short Summer break. With 13 new players out of the 16, the lads would need to quickly get to know each other against strong opponents.
Two excellent deliveries from Kaseem Azam early on were begging for a Castle head, but went unpunished. Sam Woodhouse tested the Witton keeper early on.
Witton created good opportunities of their own, a good save from Leo Forlani in the Castle goal kept it at 0-0 at half time.
A strong start from Castle saw more good opportunities squandered, with Putnam, Wood and Bennett all unlucky not to open the scoring. Witton punished the hosts with a well worked goal, in what otherwise had been a hard to breach defence with Cawthorne and Lovatt both playing commanding roles.
The goal Castle deserved came from Lewis Wood who slotted home neatly after good Castle build up. Both teams could have scored again, but a well contested game ended up all square.
Manager Gavin Appleby said "It was a good game for both teams and we enjoyed seeing our lads play after a month of training. There were some strong performances throughout and it was a good opener for us. Good to see First Team Manager Robin van der Laan watching the boys today, looking at future players for the adult team. With more friendlies coming up, it will be good to see some more of the group."
