Match Preview - Newcastle Town FC vs Prescot Cables FC

30/01/2023

By Chris Gibbs

Let’s get back to winning ways…

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since the reverse fixture against Saturday’s opponents Prescot Cables at the beginning of October.

That slightly bad-tempered affair ended in a goalless draw at the Joseph Russell Stadium – a result which at the time extended our unbeaten start to the league season to seven matches.

The last three months have been challenging to say the least but despite the 3-0 defeat at Workington last weekend, it certainly feels that a corner has been turned.

Additions to the squad help, and on that note, we are thrilled to be bringing Ant Malbon back to the club. In his first spell with us back in 2011-12, Ant scored 17 goals in 26 appearances – a run of form which earnt him a move to Kidderminster Harriers.

Ant went on to become Kidsgrove’s record goal-scorer and once he’s back fit, will help provide a cutting edge to some of our excellent approach play.

But Ant isn’t our only recent arrival. Jack Derbyshire made his league debut off the bench at Workington last weekend and will be hoping to get more minutes following his arrival from Kidsgrove.

Our opponents on Saturday, Prescot, were unbeaten with three wins from four games in January before they slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Trafford last Saturday – a result which has seriously dented their promotion hopes.

It’s down to us to put another dent in them on Saturday and help to ease our own relegation concerns at the same time.

Come on ‘Castle!
