Run of home games continues with visit from Widnes
We’ll be putting our unbeaten run to the test again this weekend when Widnes are the visitors to Buckmaster Avenue for the second in our run of three successive Saturday home games.
We are currently six points off the play-offs but still only six places from those dreaded relegation spots, so there’s no question of any complacency setting in, as we attempt to continue our climb up the Northern Premier League West Division table.
A win on Saturday will guarantee just that, as Widnes who sit in 10th can be pulled in with three points at home at the weekend. Doing that won’t be easy though. After three successive defeats from the end of December into January, Widnes have suddenly rediscovered their form smashing nine goals passed Mossley and 1874 Northwich in their last two matches without being breached at the other end.
While we haven’t threatened to be quite that prolific, we have certainly demonstrated a new-found resilience, which wasn’t quite so evident last year.
And while the numbers aren’t yet amounting to four and five-goal wins, the link up play between new front pairing Jake Avery and Tom Jones is really starting to click.
And our solid four back four of Derbs, Josh, Stubbsy and Ollie is continuing to be as reliable as ever meaning that we don’t need to be going on the hunt for a hatful of goals. Such has been the consistency of performance in recent weeks that for the first time this season we fielded an unchanged XI against Clitheroe.
New signing Jake Twyford and plenty of others besides will be hoping that they may have convinced the gaffer of a place in the starting line-up in training this week but against that is the risk of upsetting the balance of the side.
Having brought some stability to the team in recent weeks though, these are the kind of problems that Neil and the rest of the management team will be only too happy to manage!
Come on Castle!
