Match Preview - Widnes FC vs Newcastle Town FC

Basement side Widnes next up for ‘Castle

There was an over-riding sense of frustration after the 1-1 draw with Hanley last weekend – a strong feeling of opportunity missed.

We all knew what a massive fillip holding on to that narrow 1-0 lead would have given the boys, but it just wasn’t to be. More frustrating perhaps for Robin was that the performance wasn’t quite at the level as some of our more recent matches when we have been extremely unlucky not to pick up victories. Had it been, then you fancy we might have run out comfortable winners having had Hanley under the cosh for large parts of the game.

However, the nature of the season is that an opportunity to put things right is never far away and our trip north to Widnes provides it. As you would expect for a club that lies at the bottom of the league, Widnes have had a tough time of it this season. However, despite their lowly league position, they have been improving in recent weeks.

Widnes have only suffered defeat in two of their last five matches – a run which includes an important win over their fellow relegation strugglers Glossop, a creditable draw with their near neighbours from across the Mersey, promotion-chasing Runcorn Linnets and coming back from Bootle with a 2-2 draw.

However much Widnes may feel they have turned the corner, it’s fixtures like this where we know we need to deliver the goods. While our results if not our form have been poor, Saturday presents an opportunity to put some real distance between ourselves and a side right up against it.

With the travelling circus of Macclesfield coming to town a week on Saturday, the time to get a vital three points is now.

Come on ‘Castle!
