Match Preview - Wythenshawe Town vs Newcastle Town

Tough test beckons at Wythenshawe Town

We’ve had a very decent start to the season, of that there’s no doubt, but it gets even tougher this August Bank Holiday weekend as we play twice in three days.

We play Nantwich at home on Monday but first up tomorrow, we visit Wythenshawe Town, who themselves have a had a terrific start to the season after promotion from the North West Counties League last time out.

They thumped tier five opposition Chadderton 7-0 in the FA Cup in their first game and have carried that momentum through their next four games as they, like us, have remained unbeaten.

They have won both their league games and showed their credentials to an even greater degree by coming out on top against Runcorn Linnets after a replay in the cup this week. With former Burnley attacking midfielder George Boyd in their ranks, it’s needless to say that they definitely carry a goal threat.

But we go into the weekend carrying plenty of positive momentum as well. We are six unbeaten and while we may not have had it easy in that time, the fact that we have come through some tight spots speaks volumes about the team spirit that Neil Baker is building among the squad.

Bakes made four changes on Tuesday to his starting line-up, and they reaped dividends, none more so than the introduction of Carlos dos Santos – the Portuguese youngster who made his full debut in midfield.

Bakes said: “I think the Wythenshawe Town game is going to be a very good test for us and we’re in good form that’s for sure. We’re six games in and it’s gone really well. The players are getting more familiar with the patterns of play I want us to work on and the fitness levels are much better as well.

“We’ll know a lot more about ourselves come Monday night and if we are still unbeaten on Monday evening, then I’ll be a very happy man and we’ll be a very happy club!”

Well I think we’d all settle for that Neil!
